The SDXC card was released in winter of 2009 and, in 2010, came out in a massive 128 GB memory size. The SDXC cards also have the fastest data transfer speed. In theory, the maximum memory size of an SDXC card is 2TB and the data transfer speed is getting faster. SDXC cards can be used in devices which have the SD Physical Layer and File System 3.00. All SDXC devices can support SD and SDHC cards but the reverse is not true. The benefit of using an SDXC card is that it increases the amount that a digital device can perform. Because the speed is so much faster on the SDXC card, users will be able to record data onto their cards faster. In practical application, this means that a photographer will be able to shoot HD quality photos without any pause between the shots as the camera stores the images. For digital video cameras, SDXC becomes crucial.

The SDXC card is improving much more than just cameras though. It allows all sorts of digital devices to expand their functions. For example, the SD Card Association talks about how the SDXC card would be able to convert a car GPS into a media center. The SD Card Association, which is the group which makes the standards for Secure Digital cards, has purposely made the design of the SDXC card so that it will be updatable for several years so consumers don’t have to worry about updating anytime too soon.
